After graduating from Fordham, Lombardi played professional football for the New York Giants and the Washington Redskins.

In 1954, Lombardi retired from playing football and began his coaching career. He was hired as an assistant coach at the United States Military Academy at West Point. In 1959, Lombardi was hired as the head coach of the Green Bay Packers. The Packers were a struggling team at the time, but Lombardi quickly turned them around. In his first season as head coach, the Packers went 7-5. In 1960, the Packers went 8-4 and won the NFL Western Conference championship. In 1961, the Packers went 11-3 and won the NFL Championship Game.

Lombardi was also a master motivator, and his players played with a passion and intensity that was unmatched in the NFL.

Lombardi's Packers were one of the most dominant teams in NFL history. They won five NFL championships in seven years, and they never had a losing season under Lombardi. Lombardi was named NFL Coach of the Year three times, and he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1971.
