A Royal Childhood
Princess Elizabeth was born on April 21, 1926, to the Duke and Duchess of York. She was the eldest of two daughters, and her younger sister, Princess Margaret, was born in 1930. The family lived in a relatively modest home in London, and Elizabeth was educated by private tutors.
In 1936, Elizabeth's uncle, King Edward VIII, abdicated the throne, and her father became King George VI. Elizabeth was now heir to the throne, and her life changed dramatically. She moved into Buckingham Palace and began to undertake royal duties.
The Coronation
Elizabeth was crowned Queen on June 2, 1953, at Westminster Abbey. She was just 27 years old, and her coronation was a lavish affair that was watched by millions around the world.
The Queen's coronation gown was made of white satin and was embroidered with gold and silver thread. She wore the Imperial State Crown, which is one of the most valuable pieces of jewelry in the world.
The coronation was a turning point in Elizabeth's life. She was now the head of state of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth, and she would reign for the next 69 years.
The Royal Family
Elizabeth married Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, in 1947. They had four children: Prince Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew, and Prince Edward.
The Royal Family has always been a source of fascination for the public, and Elizabeth and Philip were careful to maintain their privacy. However, they also shared some of their family life with the world, and the Queen was often seen with her children and grandchildren.
Elizabeth was a devoted mother and grandmother, and she was always there for her family. She was also a loyal wife, and she and Philip were married for 73 years.
The Queen's Reign
Elizabeth's reign was marked by a number of significant events, including the Suez Crisis, the Falklands War, and the end of the Cold War. She also witnessed the rise of the internet and the globalization of the world.
