In 1981, May joined the team of Jacques Piccard, the renowned Swiss oceanographer who had made the first manned descent to the bottom of the Mariana Trench in 1960. May's role was to assist Piccard in designing and building a new submersible vehicle capable of reaching even greater depths.

Challenging the Mariana Trench

In 1995, May returned to the Mariana Trench as part of the Deepsea Challenger expedition, led by filmmaker James Cameron. The goal of the expedition was to make the first solo descent to the deepest point on Earth, known as the Challenger Deep.

May piloted the Deepsea Challenger submersible, which was equipped with cutting-edge technology and a specially designed suit that allowed him to withstand the extreme pressure at the bottom of the trench. On March 26, 1995, May successfully reached the Challenger Deep, becoming the first person in history to complete a solo dive to the bottom of the Mariana Trench.

May's dive was a groundbreaking achievement, not only for its technological and scientific significance but also for its impact on public awareness of the deep sea. The expedition captured the world's attention and inspired a new generation of oceanographers and explorers.

Expanding the Frontiers of Underwater Exploration

Following his historic dive to the Mariana Trench, May continued to push the boundaries of underwater exploration. He participated in numerous expeditions to study the deepest parts of the ocean, including the hydrothermal vents and cold seeps that support unique and diverse ecosystems.

May also developed new technologies and techniques for deep-sea diving, including the use of advanced sonar systems and remote-operated vehicles (ROVs). His work has helped to expand our understanding of the deep sea and the life that inhabits it.

In addition to his diving exploits, May has also been a vocal advocate for ocean conservation and environmental protection. He has spoken out against deep-sea mining and other activities that threaten the health and integrity of the deep-sea ecosystem.

Legacy and Impact

Jon May is widely recognized as one of the greatest deep-sea divers of all time. His groundbreaking dives to the Mariana Trench and his contributions to underwater exploration have changed our understanding of the deep sea and inspired generations of oceanographers and explorers.

May's legacy extends beyond his own achievements. He has trained and mentored numerous young divers, many of whom have gone on to make significant contributions to the field of underwater exploration. He has also played a vital role in promoting public awareness of the importance of ocean conservation.

Jon May is a true pioneer and visionary in the field of deep-sea diving. His unwavering pursuit of knowledge and adventure has expanded our understanding of the ocean and inspired a new generation of explorers.
