Churchill's Early Life and Career
Winston Churchill was born on November 30, 1874, in Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire, England. His father, Lord Randolph Churchill, was a Conservative politician, and his mother, Jennie Jerome, was an American heiress. Churchill was educated at Harrow School and the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. After graduating from Sandhurst, Churchill served in the British Army in India, Sudan, and South Africa. He also worked as a war correspondent for several newspapers.
In 1900, Churchill was elected to the House of Commons as a Conservative MP. He served in various ministerial positions in the Conservative government, including Home Secretary and Chancellor of the Exchequer. In 1915, Churchill was appointed First Lord of the Admiralty, a position he held until 1916. During his time as First Lord of the Admiralty, Churchill oversaw the Gallipoli campaign, which was a disastrous defeat for the British. Churchill was forced to resign from his post, but he remained a prominent figure in British politics.
World War II and the Grand Alliance
In 1939, World War II began with the invasion of Poland by Nazi Germany. Churchill was appointed Prime Minister of the United Kingdom in May 1940, following the resignation of Neville Chamberlain. Churchill immediately began to form the Grand Alliance, a coalition of nations that would oppose the Axis powers.
