Early Life and Career
Reinhard Heydrich was born on March 7, 1904, in Halle, Germany. His father was a music teacher and his mother was a devout Catholic. Heydrich was a brilliant student and excelled in mathematics and science. He joined the Navy in 1922 and served as a communications officer. In 1931, he joined the SS and quickly rose through the ranks. In 1934, he was appointed head of the Gestapo, the Nazi secret police.

He was responsible for the establishment of the Einsatzgruppen, mobile killing units that murdered millions of Jews, Roma, and other minorities. Heydrich was assassinated by Czech partisans on May 27, 1942. He was driving through Prague when a bomb exploded under his car. Heydrich died from his injuries a week later. His assassination was a major blow to the Nazis, and it led to a wave of reprisals against the Czech population.
