After graduating from college, Stout moved to New York City, where she worked as a journalist and editor. However, she eventually decided to pursue her love of gardening and moved to Connecticut in 1935. She purchased a small farm, where she began to experiment with organic gardening methods.

Stout's approach to gardening was based on the belief that the soil is a living ecosystem that should be nurtured and protected. She used mulches and compost to improve soil structure and fertility, and she avoided using chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Stout also advocated for the use of companion planting, which is the practice of planting different species of plants together to benefit each other.

Writing and Lectures

Stout also became a popular lecturer, sharing her gardening tips and advice with audiences across the country. She was known for her down-to-earth style and her ability to make gardening accessible to even the most novice gardener.

Personal Life

Ruth Stout never married and had no children. She lived a simple life, focused on her gardening and writing. She was a private person who shied away from the limelight. Stout died on August 11, 1980, at the age of 96.
