William Van Horne

George Simpson

George Simpson (1786-1860) was a Scottish fur trader and explorer who led the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) for over 30 years. Born in Scotland, Simpson came to Canada in 1820 and quickly rose to prominence within the HBC. He was instrumental in expanding the company's reach across the vast wilderness of North America.

Simpson was a skilled negotiator and diplomat. He established alliances with Indigenous peoples and played a key role in the settlement of the Oregon Territory dispute between Britain and the United States. He also explored the Arctic and was the first European to reach the Mackenzie River delta.

Tom Thomson

Tom Thomson (1877-1917) was a Canadian artist who is renowned for his vibrant and evocative landscapes of the Canadian wilderness. Born in Ontario, Thomson studied art in Toronto and New York before embarking on a career as a commercial artist. In 1912, he moved to Algonquin Park and began to paint the rugged and unspoiled landscapes that would become his signature style.

Thomson's paintings are characterized by their vibrant colors, bold brushstrokes, and lyrical depictions of nature. He was a master of light and shadow, and his work captures the beauty and mystery of the Canadian wilderness.

Simon Girty

Simon Girty (1741-1818) was a controversial figure who fought with Native American tribes against the United States during the American Revolution. Born in Pennsylvania, Girty was captured by Native Americans as a child and adopted into the Seneca tribe. He later sided with the British during the American Revolution and became a fierce warrior.

Girty's actions during the war earned him the hatred of many Americans, who considered him a traitor. However, he was also respected by the Native Americans who fought alongside him. After the war, Girty lived among the Native Americans in Ohio and Indiana.

Mary Pickford

Mary Pickford (1892-1979) was a Canadian-American actress who is known as "America's Sweetheart." Born in Toronto, Pickford began her acting career as a child. She rose to stardom in the early days of Hollywood and became one of the most popular actresses in the world.

Pickford was known for her innocent and wholesome image. She played roles that emphasized her sweetness and vulnerability. In 1919, she co-founded the United Artists Corporation with Charlie Chaplin, Douglas Fairbanks, and D.W. Griffith.
