Early Life and Education
Karl Marx was born on May 5, 1818, in Trier, Germany. His father was a lawyer and his mother was from a wealthy family. Marx received a privileged education, attending the universities of Bonn and Berlin. He studied law, philosophy, and history.
While at university, Marx became involved in radical politics. He joined a group of young intellectuals who were critical of the Prussian government. Marx was also influenced by the ideas of the French Revolution and the German philosopher Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel.
Political Activities
After graduating from university, Marx moved to Paris. In Paris, he became involved in the political activities of the German émigré community. He also met his future wife, Jenny von Westphalen.
In 1843, Marx was expelled from Paris by the French government. He moved to Brussels, where he continued his political activities. In Brussels, Marx wrote his first major work, The Holy Family. In this work, Marx criticized the ideas of the German philosopher Bruno Bauer.
In 1848, Marx returned to Germany. He became involved in the German Revolution of 1848-1849. After the revolution failed, Marx was forced to flee Germany again. He moved to London, where he spent the rest of his life.
Economic Theories
In London, Marx continued his political and economic writings. He published his most famous work, Capital, in 1867. In Capital, Marx argued that capitalism is a system that is based on the exploitation of workers. He predicted that capitalism would eventually lead to its own downfall and be replaced by a socialist society.
Marx's economic theories have been widely debated and criticized. However, they have also been influential in the development of economic thought and social movements around the world.
Legacy
Karl Marx died on March 14, 1883. He is buried in Highgate Cemetery in London. Marx's ideas continue to be debated today. He is one of the most important and influential thinkers of all time.
