Memoir of the Warsaw Uprising: New York Review Classics
By Janusz Bardach
The Warsaw Uprising was one of the most heroic and tragic events of World War II. In August 1944, the Polish Home Army, a resistance movement loyal to the Polish government-in-exile in London, launched an uprising against the German occupiers of Warsaw. The uprising was timed to coincide with the Soviet advance on Warsaw, and the Polish resistance hoped that the Soviets would liberate the city and help them to establish a free and independent Poland.

However, the Soviet advance stalled on the outskirts of Warsaw, and the uprising was left to fight on its own. The Germans responded with overwhelming force, and the uprising was crushed after 63 days of fierce fighting. An estimated 200,000 people were killed, including 16,000 Polish resistance fighters and an estimated 150,000 Polish civilians.
Memoir of the Warsaw Uprising is a firsthand account of the uprising by Janusz Bardach, a young Polish resistance fighter who fought in the uprising. Bardach's memoir is a powerful and moving account of the heroism and suffering of the Polish people during the uprising. He describes the fierce fighting, the terrible conditions in the besieged city, and the heartbreak of losing friends and comrades.
Bardach's memoir is also a valuable historical document. It provides a unique insight into the events of the uprising and the motivations of the Polish resistance fighters. Bardach's account is all the more powerful because it is written with such honesty and restraint. He does not glorify the uprising or its participants, but he does not shy away from the harsh realities of war.
Memoir of the Warsaw Uprising is a must-read for anyone interested in World War II, Polish history, or the human spirit. It is a powerful and moving account of one of the most heroic and tragic events of the 20th century.
