Early Life and Career

Ellen Browning Scripps was born in London, England on October 18, 1836. Her father was a successful journalist and newspaper publisher. Scripps inherited her father's love of writing and journalism, and she began her career as a journalist in her early twenties.

In 1869, Scripps moved to San Diego, California, where she founded the San Diego Union newspaper. The Union was a successful venture, and Scripps quickly became one of the most influential journalists in Southern California.

Philanthropic Endeavors

Scripps was a generous philanthropist, and she donated millions of dollars to various causes throughout her lifetime. She was particularly interested in supporting education and journalism. In 1925, she founded the Scripps College for Women in Claremont, California. Scripps College is now a leading liberal arts college for women.

Scripps also supported the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego. The Scripps Institution of Oceanography is one of the world's leading oceanographic research institutions.

In addition to her support for education and journalism, Scripps also donated money to hospitals, libraries, and other charitable organizations. She was a strong believer in the importance of giving back to the community, and she set an example for other philanthropists to follow.

Legacy

Ellen Browning Scripps died in 1932 at the age of 95. She left behind a legacy of philanthropy that continues to benefit society today. Scripps College, the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and the many other organizations that she supported are all testaments to her generosity and her commitment to making the world a better place.

Ellen Browning Scripps was a pioneer of American philanthropy. She was a generous and compassionate woman who used her wealth to make a difference in the world. Her legacy of giving continues to inspire others to follow in her footsteps.
