George VI was the reigning monarch of the United Kingdom during World War II. He was a conscientious and dedicated king who provided stability and leadership during a time of great turmoil. He was born Albert Frederick Arthur George on December 14, 1895, the second son of King George V and Queen Mary. George VI was not initially interested in becoming king. He was content to live a quiet life with his family. However, when his brother abdicated, he had no choice but to take on the role of monarch. He was crowned king on May 12, 1937.

Reign

George VI's reign was dominated by World War II. He became a symbol of unity and resolve for the British people. He visited troops, factories, and hospitals, and he gave speeches that boosted morale.
