The Early Years

The Johnson & Johnson company was founded by three brothers: Robert Wood Johnson I, James Wood Johnson, and Edward Mead Johnson. The brothers were born in New Brunswick, New Jersey, to a wealthy family. Their father, James Wood Johnson Sr., was a successful businessman and politician.

The brothers were all bright and ambitious. Robert Wood Johnson I was a gifted chemist, while James Wood Johnson was a talented marketer. Edward Mead Johnson was a physician who specialized in pediatrics.

In 1886, the brothers pooled their resources to start a company that would manufacture surgical dressings. The company was initially called Johnson & Johnson, but it was later renamed Johnson & Johnson after Robert Wood Johnson I became the sole owner.

The Rise of Johnson & Johnson

Under the leadership of Robert Wood Johnson I, Johnson & Johnson quickly became a major player in the healthcare industry. The company's products were used in hospitals, clinics, and homes around the world.

Robert Wood Johnson I was a visionary leader who was always looking for new ways to improve the company's products and services. He was also a generous philanthropist who donated millions of dollars to hospitals and other charitable organizations.

Robert Wood Johnson I died in 1942, but the company continued to grow and prosper under the leadership of his son, Robert Wood Johnson II. Robert Wood Johnson II was a brilliant businessman who expanded the company's product line and oversaw its international expansion.

Robert Wood Johnson II died in 1997, and the company is now led by his son, James Wood Johnson IV. James Wood Johnson IV is a successful businessman in his own right, and he has continued to grow the company's business.

Power Struggles and Scandals

The Johnson & Johnson dynasty has not been without its share of power struggles and scandals. In the 1970s, Robert Wood Johnson II was accused of having an affair with a company employee. The scandal led to a bitter divorce and a public relations nightmare for the company.

In the 1980s, Johnson & Johnson was sued by the United States government for allegedly overcharging the government for drugs. The company settled the lawsuit for $100 million.

In recent years, Johnson & Johnson has been embroiled in a scandal involving defective hip implants. The implants were manufactured by a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, and they were found to be causing serious injuries in patients.

The hip implant scandal has cost Johnson & Johnson billions of dollars in lawsuits and settlements. The company's reputation has also been damaged.

Tragedies

The Johnson & Johnson family has also been touched by tragedy. In 1932, Robert Wood Johnson I's son, Robert Wood Johnson Jr., was killed in a car accident. Robert Wood Johnson Jr. was a talented young businessman who was expected to take over the company from his father.

In 1997, Robert Wood Johnson II's son, John Wood Johnson, was killed in a plane crash. John Wood Johnson was a successful businessman and philanthropist. He was also a father of three young children.

The deaths of Robert Wood Johnson Jr. and John Wood Johnson were devastating blows to the Johnson & Johnson family. The family has never fully recovered from these tragedies.

The Johnson & Johnson dynasty is a complex and fascinating story. The family has experienced great success, but it has also been touched by tragedy and scandal. Despite the challenges, the Johnson & Johnson family has remained united and committed to the company.

Johnson & Johnson is now a global healthcare giant, and it is likely to continue to be a major force in the industry for many years to come.
