Josef František was a Czech fighter pilot who flew for the Royal Air Force during World War Two. He was one of the most successful fighter pilots of the war, credited with shooting down 17 enemy aircraft. František's memoir, "The Last Gladiator", is an engaging and inspiring account of his life and experiences.

Early Life and Training

Josef František was born in 1914 in the town of České Budějovice, Czechoslovakia. He was the son of a farmer and grew up in a rural area. František had a passion for flying from an early age, and he joined the Czechoslovak Air Force in 1935. He received his pilot training at the Air Force Academy in Prostějov, and he graduated in 1938.

Combat Experience

When the Nazis invaded Czechoslovakia in 1939, František fled to Poland. He eventually made his way to France, where he joined the French Air Force. He flew combat missions against the Germans during the Battle of France, and he shot down two enemy aircraft.

After France fell to the Germans, František escaped to England. He joined the Royal Air Force in 1940, and he was assigned to the No. 310 Squadron. František flew combat missions over the English Channel and over France. He was a skilled and aggressive pilot, and he quickly became one of the RAF's top fighter aces.

František shot down his first enemy aircraft over the English Channel in 1940. He went on to shoot down a total of 17 enemy aircraft during the war. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Czech Military Cross for his bravery and skill.

Post-War Life

After the war, František returned to Czechoslovakia. He served in the Czechoslovak Air Force until 1948, when he was forced to flee the country after the communist takeover. František settled in England, where he worked as a pilot and a flight instructor. He also wrote his memoir, "The Last Gladiator", which was published in 1957.

Josef František died in 1990 at the age of 75. He was a decorated war hero and a respected fighter pilot. His memoir, "The Last Gladiator", is an inspiring account of his life and experiences.
