Early life

Wally Yonamine was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, on March 17, 1925. He was the son of Japanese immigrants. Yonamine began playing baseball at a young age and was a standout player at McKinley High School. After graduating from high school, Yonamine played for the University of Hawaii.

Professional career

In 1950, Yonamine signed with the Mainichi Orions of the Japanese Baseball League (JBL). He was one of the first non-Japanese players to play in Japan. Yonamine quickly became a star in Japan, leading the JBL in home runs in 1951. He also helped the Orions win the Japan Series in 1954.

In 1959, Yonamine was traded to the Yomiuri Giants. He helped the Giants win the Japan Series in 1959, 1960, and 1961. Yonamine retired as a player in 1964.

Managerial career

After retiring as a player, Yonamine became a manager. He managed the Giants from 1965 to 1971 and led the team to three Japan Series titles. Yonamine also managed the Seibu Lions from 1978 to 1981.

Legacy
