Cochran was born in Pensacola, Florida, in 1906. She began flying in 1932 and quickly became one of the most skilled pilots in the country. In 1935, she became the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean, setting a new record for the fastest transatlantic flight by a woman.
In 1941, Cochran joined the Women's Auxiliary Ferrying Squadron (WAFS),which was a group of female pilots who flew aircraft from factories to military bases during World War II. Cochran quickly rose through the ranks of the WAFS and became one of its most decorated pilots. She flew over 30 different types of aircraft and delivered over 2,000 planes to military bases around the world.
After the war, Cochran continued to fly and set new records. In 1953, she became the first woman to break the sound barrier. She also set a new world speed record for women in 1954.
