Vietnam War Service

As they approached their target, they came under heavy fire from enemy anti-aircraft guns. Hudner's helicopter was hit multiple times, and he was seriously wounded. Despite his injuries, Hudner refused to abandon his mission. He continued to fly until he had rescued all of the downed pilots, and then he flew his damaged helicopter back to safety.
For his actions on January 11, 1968, Hudner was awarded the Medal of Honor. He was the only Navy helicopter pilot to receive the Medal of Honor during the Vietnam War.
