Early Life and Career

Pat Patterson was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada on January 19, 1941. He began his wrestling career in the late 1950s, competing in various territories throughout North America. In 1972, he joined the World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF),which would later become the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) and then WWE.

Patterson quickly became one of the top stars in the WWWF, winning the WWWF North American Heavyweight Championship in 1975. He also formed a tag team with Ray Stevens, and the duo won the WWWF World Tag Team Championship in 1977.

The Montreal Screwjob

One of the most infamous moments in wrestling history occurred at the 1997 Survivor Series pay-per-view event. In the main event of the evening, Shawn Michaels was supposed to defeat Bret Hart for the WWF Championship. However, the match ended in controversy when referee Earl Hebner called for the bell even though Hart had not submitted.

The incident, which became known as the Montreal Screwjob, was largely orchestrated by Patterson, who was the WWF's head of creative at the time. Patterson has since said that he regrets his role in the Screwjob, but it remains one of the most talked-about moments in wrestling history.

Other Contributions to the Wrestling Industry

In addition to his in-ring accomplishments, Patterson also made significant contributions to the wrestling industry behind the scenes. He was a key figure in the development of the WWF's television shows, and he also helped to create some of the most iconic characters in wrestling history, including Hulk Hogan and The Ultimate Warrior.

Patterson was also a mentor to many young wrestlers, including Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, and Triple H. He helped to teach them the ins and outs of the business, and he played a major role in their development as wrestlers.

Legacy

Pat Patterson passed away on December 2, 2020, at the age of 79. He left behind a legacy that will continue to inspire future generations of wrestlers. He was a pioneer in the industry, and he helped to make wrestling the global phenomenon that it is today.

Patterson was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 1996, and he was also the recipient of the Cauliflower Alley Club's Iron Mike Mazurki Award in 2019. He will be remembered as one of the most influential figures in the history of wrestling.
