Apartheid was a system of racial segregation that was implemented in South Africa from 1948 to 1994. The system was based on the idea that the different races in South Africa were not equal, and that the white race was superior to the other races. Three students who risked their lives to destroy apartheid were Steve Biko, Ahmed Kathrada, and Denis Goldberg. Steve Biko
Steve Biko was born in 1946 in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. He became involved in the anti-apartheid movement while he was a student at the University of Natal. In 1968, he founded the South African Students' Organization (SASO),which was a black consciousness organization that fought for the rights of black South Africans.
Biko was arrested by the police in 1976 and was tortured to death in prison. His death sparked a wave of protests and demonstrations throughout South Africa. Biko became a symbol of the anti-apartheid movement, and his legacy continues to inspire people around the world.
Ahmed Kathrada
Ahmed Kathrada was born in 1929 in Schweizer-Reneke, South Africa. He became involved in the anti-apartheid movement while he was a student at the University of the Witwatersrand. In 1952, he joined the ANC and became a member of the ANC's National Executive Committee.
Kathrada was arrested by the police in 1963 and was sentenced to life imprisonment. He spent 26 years in prison, but he never gave up his fight for freedom. He was released from prison in 1990, and he continued to work for the ANC until his death in 2017.
Denis Goldberg
Denis Goldberg was born in 1933 in Cape Town, South Africa. He became involved in the anti-apartheid movement while he was a student at the University of Cape Town. In 1960, he joined the ANC and became a member of the ANC's National Executive Committee.
Goldberg was arrested by the police in 1964 and was sentenced to life imprisonment. He spent 22 years in prison, but he never gave up his fight for freedom. He was released from prison in 1985, and he continued to work for the ANC until his death in 2020.
