The Early Years

Gerald Dwain Hines was born in Gary, Indiana, on September 15, 1925. His father was a steelworker, and his mother worked as a homemaker. Hines grew up during the Great Depression, and he often witnessed the struggles of his neighbors. This experience instilled in him a lifelong commitment to community service.

Hines attended Purdue University, where he studied architecture. After graduating in 1949, he moved to Houston, Texas, where he worked for a small architectural firm. In 1957, he founded his own company, Hines Interests.

The Hines Empire

Hines Interests quickly became one of the most successful real estate development companies in the world. Hines developed some of the most iconic skyscrapers in the world, including the Sears Tower, the Bank of America Plaza, and the Petronas Towers.

Hines was a pioneer in sustainable architecture. He was one of the first developers to use energy-efficient construction materials and renewable energy sources. He also worked to create pedestrian-friendly neighborhoods and public spaces.

Civic Leadership

In addition to his business success, Hines was also a dedicated civic leader. He served on the boards of numerous organizations, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the Houston Symphony. Hines was married to Dorothy Buffington Hines for 66 years. They had four children. Hines was a passionate golfer and a collector of American art. He died on August 22, 2020, at the age of 95.

The Petronas Towers were the tallest buildings in the world for six years, until they were surpassed by the Taipei 101 in 2004.
