The Setting

Saigon, now known as Ho Chi Minh City, was the capital of French Indochina from 1887 to 1954. During this time, the city was a hub of commerce and culture, and it was also a hotbed of revolutionary activity.

The French had a strong presence in Saigon, and they ruled the city with an iron fist. They imposed their own laws and customs on the Vietnamese people, and they often treated them with brutality.

Despite the French oppression, the Vietnamese people never gave up their dream of independence. They organized secret societies and plotted to overthrow the French.

The Characters

The story of passion, betrayal, and revolution in colonial Saigon is told through the eyes of three main characters: Nguyen Van Cu, a young Vietnamese revolutionary; Marguerite Duras, a French woman who falls in love with Cu; and Tran Van Soai, a Vietnamese double agent who betrays Cu.

Nguyen Van Cu is a passionate and idealistic young man who is determined to free his country from French rule. He is a skilled organizer and a charismatic leader, and he quickly becomes a major figure in the Vietnamese revolutionary movement.

Marguerite Duras is a French woman who comes to Saigon in 1929. She is a talented writer and a free spirit, and she is immediately drawn to Cu's intelligence and passion. The two of them fall in love, and their relationship is both intense and tumultuous.

Tran Van Soai is a Vietnamese double agent who works for both the French and the Vietnamese. He is a cunning and manipulative man, and he is willing to do anything to achieve his own goals. Soai betrays Cu and the Vietnamese revolutionary movement, and his actions lead to the deaths of many innocent people.
