In 1939, World War II broke out. Harold was 20 years old at the time. He was working as a carpenter when he decided to volunteer for military service. He joined the 8th Princess Louise's (Armoured) Regiment, a Calgary-based unit. Harold underwent basic training and was then assigned to the 5th Armoured Regiment. The 5th Armoured Regiment was part of the 1st Canadian Armoured Brigade. The 1st Canadian Armoured Brigade landed in Normandy on D-Day, June 6, 1944. The brigade fought its way through Normandy and into Belgium. In August 1944, the brigade was part of the Battle of Falaise, which resulted in the destruction of the German 7th Army. Harold fought with the 5th Armoured Regiment throughout the war. He participated in some of the most significant battles of the war, including the Battle of the Bulge. He was a brave and dedicated soldier who served with distinction. Harold was wounded in action several times, but he always returned to the front lines. After the war, Harold returned to Calgary. He worked as a carpenter and was an active member of his community. He married and had two children. Harold was a loving husband and father. He was also a respected member of his community. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion and served as a volunteer with several organizations. Harold Jorgen Skaarup died on March 11, 2006. He was 87 years old.
