Herbert Kaufman was born in Vienna, Austria, in 1924. He was the youngest of four children. His father was a successful businessman, and his mother was a homemaker. Herbert had a happy childhood, and he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
In 1938, Austria was annexed by Nazi Germany. Herbert's father was arrested and sent to a concentration camp. Herbert and his family were forced to move into a ghetto. Life in the ghetto was difficult, and Herbert often went hungry. In 1942, Herbert and his family were rounded up and sent to Auschwitz-Birkenau.
Auschwitz was a death camp, and Herbert witnessed many horrors there. He saw people being beaten, starved, and gassed. Herbert himself was forced to work as a slave laborer. He was constantly in fear of being killed.
In 1945, Auschwitz was liberated by the Soviet Army. Herbert was one of the few survivors. He was weak and sick, but he was alive. Herbert was eventually reunited with his mother and sisters. His father had been killed in the Holocaust.
After the war, Herbert and his family immigrated to the United States. Herbert struggled to adjust to his new life at first. He had nightmares about his experiences in the Holocaust. He also had difficulty finding work. Eventually, Herbert was able to find a job as a social worker. He worked with Holocaust survivors and other refugees.
