Marcus was born in Romania in 1927. He studied mathematics at the University of Bucharest, where he received his doctorate in 1953. After graduation, he taught at the University of Bucharest for several years before moving to the United States in 1965. He joined the faculty of the University of California, Berkeley, where he remained for the rest of his career. He retired in 1994, but continued to be active in research and writing.
Marcus's research covered a wide range of topics in mathematical logic, foundations of computer science, and linguistics. He made significant contributions to the theory of formal languages, automata theory, complexity theory, and artificial intelligence. He also developed a new theory of information, which he called "information geometry." This theory has been applied to a variety of problems in information theory, computer science, and linguistics.
Marcus was a prolific writer. He published over 50 books and 500 papers. His work has been translated into more than 20 languages. He was also a gifted teacher and mentor. He supervised more than 50 doctoral students, many of whom have gone on to successful careers in academia and industry.
Marcus was a recipient of numerous awards and honors. He was a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the Romanian Academy of Sciences. He was also a foreign member of the French Academy of Sciences and the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Marcus will be remembered as a brilliant scholar, a dedicated teacher, and a generous mentor. His work has had a profound impact on the fields of mathematical logic, foundations of computer science, and linguistics. He will be deeply missed by his colleagues, students, and friends.
