Zwi first arrived in Africa in 1963, when she was just 22 years old. She had come to work as a teacher in a remote village in Zambia, and she quickly fell in love with the country and its people. Over the next few years, she would return to Africa many times, working as a journalist, a development worker, and a teacher.
In her book, Zwi writes about the challenges and rewards of living and working in Africa. She describes the poverty, the disease, and the violence that she witnessed. But she also writes about the beauty of the African landscape, the resilience of the African people, and the hope that she found in Africa.
One of the most powerful chapters in the book is about Zwi's experience of the Rhodesian Bush War. She was working as a journalist in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) when the war broke out in 1972. She witnessed firsthand the brutality of the war, and she was deeply affected by the suffering of the people of Rhodesia.
Zwi's book is not just a personal memoir. It is also a valuable historical document. She provides a unique perspective on some of the most important events in African history, including the Rhodesian Bush War, the independence of Zambia, and the rise of Nelson Mandela.
Zwi's writing is clear, concise, and evocative. She has a gift for storytelling, and she brings the people and places of Africa to life. 'Another Year in Africa' is a must-read for anyone who is interested in Africa, its history, or its people.
