Early Life and Career
Jack London was born John Griffith Chaney in San Francisco, California, on January 12, 1876. His father was an itinerant astrologer and his mother was a former schoolteacher. London's parents divorced when he was five years old, and he was raised by his mother and stepfather in Oakland, California. London's childhood was marked by poverty and hardship. He dropped out of school at the age of 14 and worked at a variety of jobs, including oyster pirate, sailor, factory worker, and gold miner. In 1897, London joined the Klondike Gold Rush.
