Early Life and Career

Jack London was born John Griffith Chaney in San Francisco, California, on January 12, 1876. His father was an itinerant astrologer and his mother was a former schoolteacher. London's parents divorced when he was five years old, and he was raised by his mother and stepfather in Oakland, California. London's childhood was marked by poverty and hardship. He dropped out of school at the age of 14 and worked at a variety of jobs, including oyster pirate, sailor, factory worker, and gold miner. In 1897, London joined the Klondike Gold Rush. He spent the next year prospecting for gold in the harsh and unforgiving environment of the Yukon Territory. London's experiences during the Gold Rush would later form the basis for many of his most famous works.

Literary Career

In 1899, London returned to California and began to write full-time. His first novel, The Son of the Wolf, was published in 1900. The novel was a critical and commercial success, and it established London as a major literary figure. London's other notable works include The Call of the Wild (1903),White Fang (1906),The Sea-Wolf (1904),and Martin Eden (1909).
