Stephen Leacock
Stephen Leacock (1869-1944) was a Canadian humorist and writer. He is best known for his humorous essays and short stories, which satirized Canadian society and politics. Leacock was a prolific writer, producing over 50 books and countless articles. He also served as a professor at McGill University for many years.
Leacock's humor was often gentle and affectionate, but it could also be sharp and biting. He was not afraid to criticize the foibles of Canadian society, and he often did so with great wit and insight.
Leacock's work has been enjoyed by generations of Canadians. He is considered one of the greatest humorists of all time, and his work continues to be read and enjoyed today.
Margaret Macmillan
Margaret Macmillan (1860-1931) was a Canadian publisher and philanthropist. She was the founder of the publishing house Macmillan & Co., which published some of the most important works of English literature in the 19th and 20th centuries.
Macmillan was born in Toronto, Ontario. She was the daughter of John Macmillan, a Scottish immigrant who founded the Globe newspaper. Macmillan was educated in Canada and England, and she began her career as a teacher. In 1884, she married Frederick Macmillan, the son of the founder of Macmillan & Co.
After her husband's death in 1891, Macmillan took over the management of the publishing house. She was a shrewd businesswoman and a gifted editor. Under her leadership, Macmillan & Co. published some of the most important works of English literature, including Rudyard Kipling's Jungle Book, Thomas Hardy's Tess of the d'Urbervilles, and D.H. Lawrence's Sons and Lovers.
Macmillan was also a generous philanthropist. She donated money to many causes, including education, healthcare, and the arts. She also established the Macmillan Company of Canada, which published Canadian authors and supported Canadian literature.
Legacy
Stephen Leacock and Margaret Macmillan were two of Canada's most influential literary figures. Their work helped to shape Canadian literature and society. Leacock's humor helped Canadians to laugh at themselves and their society, while Macmillan's publishing house helped to bring Canadian literature to the world.
Both Leacock and Macmillan are remembered today as two of Canada's greatest citizens. Their work continues to inspire and entertain Canadians of all ages.
