Early life and education
Emily Hahn was born in St. Louis, Missouri, on January 14, 1905. Her father was a lawyer and her mother was a writer. Hahn attended Smith College, where she studied English and history. She graduated in 1926 and moved to New York City, where she worked as a journalist.
Career
In 1931, Hahn moved to China to work as a correspondent for The New York Times. She quickly became a respected journalist, and her work was widely read. In 1935, she published her first book, The Soong Sisters. The book was a biography of the three Soong sisters, who were influential figures in Chinese politics. Hahn's book was a critical and commercial success, and it helped to establish her reputation as a writer.
In the late 1930s, Hahn began to write travelogues about her experiences in China. Her travelogues were praised for their vivid descriptions and their insights into Chinese culture. In 1940, she published her most famous travelogue, China to Me. The book was a bestseller, and it helped to introduce China to a Western audience.
In the 1940s and 1950s, Hahn continued to write travelogues and biographies. She also translated many Chinese works into English, including The Dream of the Red Chamber.
