Sandel begins by arguing that there is no such thing as a purely objective morality. All moral judgments are made from a particular perspective, and there is no way to escape our own biases and presuppositions. This does not mean that all moral judgments are equally valid, however. Sandel argues that we can still make reasoned judgments about right and wrong, even if we cannot always be certain that our judgments are objectively true.
Sandel then goes on to discuss some of the most common ethical dilemmas we face. These include:
- The conflict between our personal interests and our moral obligations
- The challenge of making decisions in the face of uncertainty
- The problem of conflicting moral duties
- The issue of moral responsibility
Sandel does not offer easy answers to these dilemmas. Instead, he provides a framework for thinking about them and making reasoned judgments. He argues that the most important thing is to be aware of our own biases and presuppositions, and to be open to considering different perspectives. We should also be willing to engage in dialogue with others, even if we disagree with them. By ng so, we can hope to make better decisions and live more ethical lives.
How Good People Make Tough Choices is a challenging and thought-provoking book that will change the way you think about ethics. Sandel's insights are invaluable for anyone who wants to make better decisions and live a more ethical life.
