Georges Vanier was born in Montreal, Quebec, on April 23, 1888. He was the eldest of seven children in a devout Catholic family. Vanier received his education at Collège Sainte-Marie and studied law at Université Laval. However, his studies were interrupted by the outbreak of World War I in August 1914.

Inspired by a sense of duty and patriotism, Vanier immediately volunteered for military service. He joined the 22nd Battalion (French-Canadians),Canadian Expeditionary Force, and was soon deployed to the Western Front.
