In the annals of World War II, the story of Ira Wolfert stands out as a testament to the indomitable spirit of the human being. A renowned journalist and author, Wolfert traded his typewriter for a rifle and became a guerrilla leader in the Philippines, fighting a bloody and desperate war against the Japanese occupation.

Wolfert was born in New York City in 1908. He began his career as a journalist in the 1930s, writing for publications such as The Nation and The New Republic. In 1941, he was sent to the Philippines to cover the war against Japan. But when the Japanese invaded the islands, Wolfert found himself stranded and cut off from the outside world.

Rather than surrender, Wolfert decided to join the resistance. He made his way to the mountains and joined up with a group of Filipino guerrillas. Wolfert quickly proved himself to be a natural leader and a skilled fighter. He led his men on daring raids against the Japanese, ambushing their patrols and sabotaging their supply lines.

Wolfert's guerrilla campaign was a major thorn in the side of the Japanese. They offered a reward for his capture, dead or alive. But Wolfert and his men continued to fight, defying the odds and inspiring the Filipino people.

In 1945, the American forces finally returned to the Philippines and liberated the islands. Wolfert and his guerrillas played a key role in the Allied victory. After the war, Wolfert returned to the United States and continued his career as a writer. He wrote several books about his experiences in the Philippines, including American Guerrilla and The Battle for Leyte Gulf.

Ira Wolfert died in 1997 at the age of 88. He is remembered as one of the most courageous and determined Americans who fought in World War II. His story is a testament to the power of the human spirit and the indomitable will to resist tyranny.

Legacy of Ira Wolfert

Ira Wolfert's legacy is one of courage, determination, and sacrifice. He was a true American hero who fought for what he believed in, even when the odds were stacked against him. Wolfert's story is an inspiration to us all, reminding us that we can overcome any challenge if we have the courage to fight for what we believe in.

Wolfert's writings continue to be read and studied today. They provide a valuable firsthand account of the guerrilla war in the Philippines and the role that ordinary people can play in making a difference in the world.

The Ira Wolfert Award

In 2008, the Ira Wolfert Award was established to honor journalists who cover war and conflict with courage and compassion. The award is given annually to a journalist who has demonstrated a commitment to telling the stories of those who are often overlooked or forgotten.

The Ira Wolfert Award is a fitting tribute to a man who dedicated his life to telling the stories of the underdog. Wolfert's legacy will continue to inspire journalists and writers for generations to come.
