Barbarian Lost: Travels in the New China
A Journey Through a Changing Landscape
In 2010, I embarked on a life-changing journey through the heart of China. I had always been fascinated by this ancient and enigmatic land, but I had no idea how profound an impact this experience would have on me. I traveled alone, armed with a backpack, a camera, and a burning desire to understand the complexities of this rapidly changing nation.

From the bustling streets of Beijing to the remote villages of the far west, I encountered a kaleidoscope of cultures, histories, and perspectives. I met people from all walks of life, each with their own unique stories to tell. I learned about the challenges they faced, their dreams, and their hopes for the future.
I was particularly struck by the resilience of the Chinese people. Despite the hardships they had endured, they remained optimistic and determined to build a better future for themselves and their children. I witnessed firsthand the extraordinary economic growth that was transforming China, but I also saw the social and environmental challenges that came with this rapid development.
As I traveled, I began to question my own preconceptions about China. I had come with a romanticized view of the country, but I soon realized that the reality was much more complex. China was a land of contrasts, where ancient traditions coexisted with modern skyscrapers, and where economic prosperity rubbed shoulders with grinding poverty.
I was particularly interested in the role of the Communist Party in shaping modern China. I met with party officials at all levels, from local cadres to senior leaders in Beijing. I learned about the party's history, its ideology, and its plans for the future. I was impressed by the party's commitment to social justice and economic development, but I also saw the challenges it faced in balancing these goals with the need for political stability.
As my journey drew to a close, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to have experienced China in all its complexity. I had come as an outsider, but I left feeling like I had found a home. China had changed me in ways I could never have imagined. It had broadened my horizons, deepened my understanding of the world, and inspired me to continue exploring the human condition in all its richness and diversity.
In the years since my travels, China has continued to evolve at a rapid pace. The challenges it faces are daunting, but I believe that the Chinese people have the resilience and determination to overcome them. China is a country with a long and rich history, and I am confident that it will continue to play a major role in shaping the future of our world.
