The story of Anna Spafford and the American Colony in Jerusalem is a remarkable tale of faith, resilience, and the power of community. Anna, the wife of American businessman Horatio Spafford, was a devout Christian who dedicated her life to helping others. In 1881, she and her family moved to Jerusalem, where they established the American Colony, a unique community that provided a haven for pilgrims, orphans, and the poor.

A Life Of Faith And Service

Anna Spafford was born in Maine in 1842. She was the daughter of a wealthy shipping magnate, and she grew up in a privileged environment. However, Anna was also a deeply religious woman, and she felt called to use her wealth and privilege to help others.

In 1861, Anna married Horatio Spafford, a successful Chicago businessman. The couple had four children, and they lived a comfortable life in the United States. However, in 1871, tragedy struck when the Great Chicago Fire destroyed the Spaffords' home and business.

The Spaffords were devastated by the fire, but Anna's faith never wavered. She believed that God had a plan for her life, and she was determined to find it. In 1881, the Spaffords moved to Jerusalem, where they hoped to start a new life.

The American Colony

In Jerusalem, the Spaffords founded the American Colony, a unique community that provided a haven for pilgrims, orphans, and the poor. The Colony was a place where people from all walks of life could come together to worship, learn, and grow.

Anna Spafford was the heart and soul of the American Colony. She was a tireless worker, and she was always willing to help those in need. She opened an orphanage, a school, and a hospital, and she provided food and shelter to the poor. Anna's work was inspired by her deep Christian faith, and she believed that everyone deserved a chance to live a good life.

A Legacy Of Service

Anna Spafford died in Jerusalem in 1923. She was 81 years old. However, her legacy continues to live on. The American Colony is still a thriving community today, and it continues to provide a haven for pilgrims, orphans, and the poor.

Anna Spafford was a remarkable woman who dedicated her life to helping others. Her story is an inspiration to us all, and it shows us the power of faith, resilience, and community.
