The Irish Countryside
Yeats was born in Dublin in 1865, but he spent much of his childhood in the countryside of County Sligo. The rolling hills, rugged coastline, and ancient ruins of this region left a lasting impression on him.
Many of Yeats's poems are set in the Irish countryside. In "The Lake Isle of Innisfree," he writes about a longing to escape from the city and live a simple life on a small island.
Irish Folklore
Yeats was also deeply interested in Irish folklore. He collected stories and legends from all over the country, and these stories often found their way into his poems.
In "The Second Coming," Yeats writes about a vision of a terrible beast rising from the sea. This beast is a symbol of the chaos and destruction that Yeats believed was coming to the world.
County Galway
In 1887, Yeats moved to County Galway, where he lived for the next seven years. He was drawn to the county's beautiful landscape and its rich cultural heritage.
Many of Yeats's poems are set in County Galway. In "The Wind Among the Reeds," he writes about the beauty of the Aran Islands.
Dublin
In 1895, Yeats moved back to Dublin. He was a leading figure in the Irish Literary Revival, and he helped to establish the Abbey Theatre.

London
In 1917, Yeats moved to London. He lived in the city for the rest of his life.
