The Irish Countryside

Yeats was born in Dublin in 1865, but he spent much of his childhood in the countryside of County Sligo. The rolling hills, rugged coastline, and ancient ruins of this region left a lasting impression on him.

Many of Yeats's poems are set in the Irish countryside. In "The Lake Isle of Innisfree," he writes about a longing to escape from the city and live a simple life on a small island.

Irish Folklore

Yeats was also deeply interested in Irish folklore. He collected stories and legends from all over the country, and these stories often found their way into his poems.

In "The Second Coming," Yeats writes about a vision of a terrible beast rising from the sea. This beast is a symbol of the chaos and destruction that Yeats believed was coming to the world.
