In her latest novel, The Serpent Queen, Eleanor Herman returns to the story of Lucrezia Borgia, and offers a fresh perspective on one of history's most notorious women. Herman's Lucrezia is a complex and sympathetic character, a woman who is both a victim and a survivor. She is a woman who is manipulated and exploited by her family, but she is also a woman who fights for her own happiness and independence.

Herman's novel is a fascinating and insightful portrait of a woman who has been misunderstood and misrepresented for centuries. Through Herman's eyes, we see Lucrezia Borgia not as the wicked and scheming temptress of legend, but as a woman of flesh and blood, a woman who was both loved and hated, and who ultimately found redemption in her own way.

Lucrezia's Early Life

Lucrezia Borgia was born in 1480, in the city of Rome. Her father was Pope Alexander VI, and her mother was Vanozza Cattanei. Lucrezia was the youngest of her father's children, and she had three brothers and two sisters.

Lucrezia's early life was marked by tragedy and turmoil. Her mother died when she was just 10 years old, and her father was often absent, preoccupied with his political and religious duties. Lucrezia was raised by her older sister, Lucrezia Borgia the Elder, and she received a privileged education. She was taught to read and write, and she studied Latin, Greek, and Italian. Lucrezia was also a skilled musician and dancer.

At the age of 13, Lucrezia was married to Giovanni Sforza, the Lord of Pesaro. The marriage was arranged by her father, and it was intended to strengthen the Borgia family's political alliances. Lucrezia was unhappy in her marriage, and she eventually fled to Rome with her lover, Peroto Caldes.

Lucrezia's Marriages

Lucrezia Borgia was married three times. Her first marriage, to Giovanni Sforza, was annulled in 1497. Her second marriage, to Alfonso of Aragon, the Duke of Bisceglie, ended in tragedy when Alfonso was murdered in 1500. Lucrezia's third marriage, to Ercole d'Este, the Duke of Ferrara, was the most successful of her three marriages. Ercole was a kind and generous husband, and Lucrezia found happiness and stability in her marriage to him.

Lucrezia's marriages were often used as political tools by her father, but she was also able to use them to her own advantage. She was a skilled diplomat, and she was able to negotiate favorable terms for herself and her family. Lucrezia was also a patron of the arts, and she supported many artists and musicians.

Lucrezia's Later Life

Lucrezia Borgia died in 1519, at the age of 39. She died of complications from childbirth, and she was buried in the Church of San Francesco in Ferrara. Lucrezia's death was a great loss to her family and friends, and she was mourned by many.

Lucrezia Borgia was a complex and fascinating woman. She was a victim of her family's ambition, but she was also a survivor. She was a pawn in her father's political schemes, but she was also a woman of great intelligence and beauty. Lucrezia Borgia was a woman of many contradictions, but she was also a woman of great strength and character.
