This article is a family memoir of the Marcos years. It is based on the experiences of the author's family, who lived in the Philippines during the Marcos dictatorship. The article discusses the family's experiences with the Marcos regime, including their struggles with poverty, discrimination, and political persecution. It also discusses the family's hopes and dreams for the future.

The Marcos dictatorship was a period of authoritarian rule in the Philippines that lasted from 1965 to 1986. Ferdinand Marcos, the dictator, used his power to suppress dissent and consolidate his control over the country. During his presidency, Marcos implemented a number of policies that had a negative impact on the lives of many Filipinos. These policies included:

  • The imposition of martial law in 1972, which gave Marcos absolute power over the country.
  • The suppression of free speech and the press.
  • The arrest and torture of political opponents.
  • The forced relocation of entire communities.
  • The plundering of the country's natural resources.

Our family was one of the many families that suffered under the Marcos dictatorship. My father was a political activist who was arrested and tortured by the Marcos regime. My mother was a schoolteacher who was fired from her job because she refused to support Marcos. My siblings and I were often harassed and bullied by Marcos's supporters.

Despite the challenges we faced, our family never gave up hope. We continued to fight for our rights and for the future of our country. We participated in protests and rallies, and we supported opposition candidates in elections. We also worked to help other families who were struggling under the dictatorship.

In 1986, the Marcos dictatorship was finally overthrown by the People Power Revolution. Marcos was forced to flee the country, and democracy was restored to the Philippines. Our family was overjoyed by the fall of the dictatorship, and we were hopeful for the future.

After the Marcos dictatorship, our family was able to rebuild our lives. My father was released from prison and returned to his job as a political activist. My mother was able to get a new teaching job, and my siblings and I were able to continue our education.

We are grateful for the opportunities that we have been given since the fall of the Marcos dictatorship. We are committed to working to ensure that such a dictatorship never happens again in our country.

Our family has many hopes and dreams for the future. We hope that the Philippines will continue to be a democracy, and that the country will be able to overcome the challenges it faces. We also hope that the Marcos family will be held accountable for the crimes they committed during the dictatorship.

We dream of a day when all Filipinos will have a chance to live a good life, free from poverty, discrimination, and political persecution. We believe that this dream is possible, and we are committed to working to make it a reality.
