In 1966 and 1967, I had the privilege of visiting Nain and capturing its unique spirit through photography. The images I took during those visits offer a glimpse into the lives of the Inuit people who called this place home and the stunning landscapes that surrounded them.
A Vibrant Community
Nain is a vibrant community with a strong sense of identity. The people of Nain are proud of their Inuit heritage and have worked hard to preserve their culture and traditions. I was fortunate to witness firsthand the community's spirit of togetherness and resilience.
One of the highlights of my visit was attending a traditional Inuit dance performance. The dancers, adorned in colorful costumes, moved with grace and precision. The rhythm of the drums and the haunting melodies of the songs filled the air, creating a truly unforgettable experience.
Stunning Landscapes
In addition to its vibrant community, Nain is also known for its stunning landscapes. The surrounding area is a vast wilderness of mountains, forests, and lakes. I spent many hours exploring these landscapes, marveling at their beauty and tranquility.
One of the most memorable moments of my trip was a hike to the top of Mount Babel. The climb was challenging, but the panoramic view from the summit was worth every step. I could see for miles in every direction, taking in the breathtaking beauty of Nunatsiavut.
Historical Significance
Nain has a long and rich history. It was first established as a Moravian mission in 1771 and played a significant role in the development of the Labrador region. I was fascinated to learn about the community's past and to see the many historical sites that remain today.
One of the most impressive historical sites in Nain is the Moravian church. Built in 1830, the church is a beautiful example of Moravian architecture and is still used for services today. I was honored to be able to visit the church and to learn about its history from the local pastor.
A Lasting Impression
My time in Nain was truly an unforgettable experience. I was deeply impressed by the beauty of the landscape, the warmth of the people, and the richness of the culture. The photographs I took during my visit capture only a glimpse of the magic of this special place, but they will always remind me of the wonderful time I spent there.
I hope that you have enjoyed this photo journey back to Nain, Nunatsiavut, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada in 1966-67. If you are ever planning a trip to this remote corner of the world, I highly recommend it. You will be rewarded with breathtaking scenery, fascinating history, and warm hospitality.
