Pat Patterson was born in Montreal, Canada, on July 19, 1941. From a young age, he had a passion for wrestling and would often spend hours watching matches on television. At the age of 17, he began training under Stu Hart at Stampede Wrestling in Calgary, Alberta.
Early Career
Patterson's early career was marked by a series of memorable matches against top wrestlers of the era, including Bret Hart, Jim Duggan, and The Dynamite Kid. He also formed a successful tag team with Ray Stevens known as "The Blond Bombers." In 1978, he made his debut in the World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF),which would later become known as the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) and WWE.
Royal Rumble Inventor
One of Patterson's most significant contributions to the wrestling world was the creation of the Royal Rumble match. In 1988, he approached Vince McMahon with the idea for a battle royal-style match with 20 wrestlers competing for a shot at the WWF World Heavyweight Championship. The first Royal Rumble was held in 1989 and quickly became one of the most popular events on the wrestling calendar.
Montreal Screwjob
Patterson was also involved in one of the most controversial moments in wrestling history, known as the Montreal Screwjob. In 1997, he was the referee for a match between Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels at Survivor Series, which was held in Hart's hometown of Montreal. The plan was for Hart to win the match and retain the WWF World Heavyweight Championship, but the match ended with Michaels winning the title in a controversial finish that was later revealed to have been orchestrated by McMahon and Patterson.

Patterson's contributions to wrestling were recognized in 1996 when he was inducted into the WWF Hall of Fame. He was also inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame again in 2019 as part of the D-Generation X group.
