Volunteer Teacher's Journey of Faith, Failure, Friendship, and Fun in China
When I first arrived in China as a volunteer teacher, I was filled with a mix of excitement and trepidation. I had always dreamed of living and working in China, and I was eager to experience the country's rich culture and history firsthand. However, I was also aware of the challenges I would likely face, such as culture shock, language barriers, and the sheer size and complexity of the country.

As it turned out, my fears were well-founded. In the early days of my volunteer work, I made a series of blunders that left me feeling embarrassed and frustrated. I accidentally insulted a student by using the wrong word, and I got lost in the city on more than one occasion. There were times when I felt like giving up, but I eventually learned to laugh at my mistakes and to see them as opportunities for growth.
One of the most challenging aspects of my experience in China was the language barrier. Although I had studied Mandarin before coming to China, I was far from fluent. This made it difficult to communicate with my students and colleagues, and it often left me feeling isolated and alone.
However, I was fortunate to have the support of a wonderful group of friends and colleagues. They helped me to overcome my language difficulties and to adjust to life in China. They also taught me a great deal about Chinese culture and history.
In addition to the challenges, I also experienced a great deal of joy and fulfillment during my time in China. I loved teaching my students and seeing them progress in their studies. I also enjoyed exploring the country and learning about its rich culture and history.
Overall, my experience as a volunteer teacher in China was a transformative one. It was a journey of faith, failure, friendship, and fun. I learned a great deal about myself and about the world. I also grew as a person and developed a deep appreciation for the Chinese people and their culture.
Here are some of the most important lessons I learned during my time as a volunteer teacher in China:
- Be prepared for culture shock. Culture shock is a common experience for people who travel to a new country. It can be caused by a variety of factors, such as differences in language, customs, and values. It is important to be aware of the potential for culture shock and to be prepared to deal with it.
- Don't be afraid to make mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes, especially when they are learning a new language or culture. It is important to learn from your mistakes and to not let them discourage you.
- Seek out support. There will be times when you feel overwhelmed or discouraged. It is important to have a support system in place to help you through these tough times.
- Embrace the experience. Volunteering in a foreign country is a unique and rewarding experience. Embrace the challenges and the joys that come with it.
If you are considering volunteering as a teacher in China, I encourage you to do so. It is a life-changing experience that will teach you a great deal about yourself and the world.
