Eyewitness to History: Israel Journal, June 1967
On June 5, 1967, Israel launched a preemptive strike against Egypt, Jordan, and Syria, beginning the Six-Day War. I was an American journalist embedded with the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) at the time, and I witnessed firsthand the events leading up to and during the war.
In the weeks leading up to the war, tensions between Israel and its Arab neighbors had been rising. Egypt had deployed troops to the Sinai Peninsula, and Jordan had signed a defense pact with Egypt. Syria had been shelling Israeli settlements in the Golan Heights. Israel feared that an Arab attack was imminent, and it decided to strike first.

The IDF then turned its attention to Jordan. On June 7, the IDF launched a ground invasion of Jordan. The Jordanians were also quickly defeated, and within a few days, the IDF had captured the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
