Ferdinand Magellan
Ferdinand Magellan was a Portuguese explorer who led the first expedition to circumnavigate the globe. He was born in Portugal in 1480, and he began his career as a sailor at a young age. Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer who discovered the Americas in 1492. He was born in Genoa, Italy in 1451, and he began his career as a merchant. In 1492, he set out from Spain with three ships. He sailed across the Atlantic Ocean and reached the Bahamas. He believed that he had reached Asia, but he had actually discovered the Americas. Columbus made four voyages to the Americas, and he explored the Caribbean Sea, the Gulf of Mexico, and the coast of South America.
Vasco da Gama
Vasco da Gama was a Portuguese explorer who discovered the sea route to India in 1498. He was born in Portugal in 1460, and he began his career as a sailor at a young age. In 1497, he set out from Portugal with four ships. He sailed around the Cape of Good Hope and across the Indian Ocean. He reached India in 1498, and he established trade relations with the local rulers. Da Gama's discovery of the sea route to India opened up new trade routes between Europe and Asia.
Jacques Cartier
Jacques Cartier was a French explorer who discovered the St. Lawrence River in 1534. He was born in France in 1491, and he began his career as a sailor at a young age. In 1534, he set out from France with two ships. He sailed across the Atlantic Ocean and reached the Gulf of St. Lawrence. He explored the St. Lawrence River and reached the site of present-day Montreal. Cartier made three voyages to North America, and he explored the coasts of Canada and the eastern United States.
Samuel de Champlain
Samuel de Champlain was a French explorer who founded the city of Quebec in 1608. He was born in France in 1567, and he began his career as a soldier. In 1603, he set out from France with two ships. He sailed across the Atlantic Ocean and reached the Gulf of St. Lawrence. He explored the St. Lawrence River and reached the site of present-day Quebec. Champlain founded the city of Quebec in 1608, and he became the first governor of New France.
David Livingstone
David Livingstone was a Scottish explorer who explored the interior of Africa in the 19th century. He was born in Scotland in 1813, and he began his career as a medical missionary. In 1841, he set out from England to Africa. He traveled through the Kalahari Desert and the Zambezi River. He discovered the Victoria Falls in 1855. Livingstone made several expeditions into Africa, and he helped to open up the continent to European exploration.
