In her memoir, Gambatte: Generations of Perseverance and Politics, Japanese American politician and activist Grace Lee Boggs tells the story of her life and her family's struggle for justice and equality.

Boggs was born in 1915 in the United States to Japanese immigrant parents. Her father was a farmer and her mother was a seamstress. Boggs grew up in a poor family, but she was always a bright and ambitious student. She graduated from high school at the top of her class and went on to college at the University of Chicago.

At the University of Chicago, Boggs became involved in the civil rights movement. She joined the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and worked to register black voters in the South. In 1963, Boggs was arrested for her work in the civil rights movement and spent several weeks in jail.

After her release from jail, Boggs continued to work for justice and equality. She helped to found the Detroit Summer (later renamed the Boggs Center to Nurture Community Leadership),a community organization that worked to improve the lives of Detroit's poor and working-class residents.

In 1974, Boggs was elected to the Detroit City Council. She served on the City Council for 20 years and was a vocal advocate for social justice and economic equality.

Boggs' memoir, Gambatte, is a powerful and inspiring story of perseverance and politics. It is a story that will resonate with anyone who has ever struggled for justice and equality.
