How Gamergate Nearly Destroyed My Life and How We Can Win the Fight Against Online Harassment
In 2014, I was one of the most visible targets of Gamergate, a misogynistic harassment campaign that targeted women in the gaming community. The experience was traumatic, and it nearly destroyed my life. But I refused to be silenced, and I fought back.
Gamergate started with a personal dispute between two people in the gaming community. But it quickly escalated into a full-blown harassment campaign, with trolls and misogynists using social media and online forums to spread hate speech, threats, and doxxing (the release of personal information) against women in gaming.

I was one of the first targets of Gamergate. I was doxxed, threatened with rape and death, and subjected to a constant stream of online harassment. The experience was terrifying, and it took a toll on my mental health. I lost my job, my friends, and my sense of safety.
But I refused to be silenced. I fought back by speaking out against Gamergate and by supporting other victims of online harassment. I also worked with other activists to develop strategies to combat online harassment.
We have made some progress in the fight against online harassment. In 2014, Gamergate was a major news story, and it helped to raise awareness of the issue of online harassment. Since then, many companies and organizations have adopted policies to combat online harassment. And there are now a number of resources available to help victims of online harassment.
But we still have a long way to go. Online harassment is still a major problem, and it continues to have a devastating impact on the lives of victims. We need to do more to raise awareness of the issue, to support victims, and to hold harassers accountable.
Here are some things we can all do to win the fight against online harassment:
- Speak out against harassment. If you see someone being harassed online, don't be afraid to speak up. Call out the harasser, and show your support for the victim.
- Support victims of harassment. If you know someone who is being harassed online, offer your support. Let them know that they are not alone, and that there are people who care about them.
- Hold harassers accountable. If you know who is harassing someone online, report them to the website or platform where the harassment is taking place. You can also file a police report.
- Educate yourself about online harassment. The more you know about online harassment, the better equipped you will be to fight it. There are a number of resources available online that can help you learn more about the issue.
We can win the fight against online harassment. But it will take all of us working together. We need to speak out against harassment, support victims, hold harassers accountable, and educate ourselves about the issue. By working together, we can create a more inclusive and welcoming online environment for everyone.
