Major John Nairne was a Scottish soldier who played a pivotal role in the defence of Quebec during the American Revolutionary War.

Nairne was born in Scotland in 1731. He joined the British Army in 1756 and served in the Seven Years' War. In 1775, he was sent to Quebec to help defend the city against the American invasion.

Nairne commanded the Royal Highland Emigrants, a regiment of Scottish Highlanders. He was known for his bravery and leadership. He led his men in several successful skirmishes against the Americans. In 1776, he was promoted to major.

In 1777, the Americans launched a major attack on Quebec. Nairne and his men played a key role in repelling the attack. They held off the Americans for several hours, giving the British time to reinforce the city.

The defence of Quebec was a major victory for the British. Nairne was hailed as a hero. He was promoted to lieutenant colonel and awarded the Order of the Bath.

Nairne continued to serve in the British Army until his death in 1806. He is buried in Quebec City.

Dundurn Castle

Nairne's home in Scotland was Dundurn Castle. The castle is located in Perthshire, near the town of Comrie.

Dundurn Castle was built in the 14th century. It was originally a stronghold of the Clan MacGregor. In the 16th century, the castle was acquired by the Nairne family.

Nairne inherited Dundurn Castle in 1789. He spent his retirement years at the castle. He died at Dundurn Castle in 1806.

Dundurn Castle is now a museum. It is open to the public from April to October.
