Materials

  • A large wooden cabinet (at least 6 feet tall and 4 feet wide)
  • A sharp knife or saw
  • A hammer
  • A piece of plywood (at least 3 feet tall and 2 feet wide)
  • A piece of cloth (at least 3 feet long and 2 feet wide)
  • A rope or cord
  • A stage or platform

Instructions

  1. Cut a hole in the back of the cabinet that is large enough for you to fit through. The hole should be about 2 feet wide and 3 feet tall.
  2. Cut a piece of plywood to fit the hole in the back of the cabinet. This piece of plywood will serve as a false back.
  3. Attach the false back to the back of the cabinet using nails or screws.
  4. Cut a piece of cloth to fit over the false back. This piece of cloth will serve as a curtain.
  5. Attach the curtain to the false back using nails or screws.
  6. Place the cabinet on the stage or platform.
  7. Step inside the cabinet and close the door behind you.
  8. Pull the curtain closed behind you.
  9. Have an assistant stand in front of the cabinet and hold the rope or cord.
  10. Have the assistant pull the rope or cord to open the curtain.
  11. As the curtain opens, you will step out of the cabinet and appear to have escaped unharmed.

Tips

  • Make sure that the hole in the back of the cabinet is large enough for you to fit through comfortably.
  • Make sure that the false back is securely attached to the cabinet.
  • Make sure that the curtain is large enough to cover the hole in the back of the cabinet.
  • Practice the illusion several times before performing it in front of an audience.
